My Journey Through Challenging Months
Jan 07, 2025
Dear Beloved Community,
The past few months have been profoundly transformative, marked by challenges, loss, healing, and moments of grace. I want to share my journey with you, one that’s taken me through hurricanes, a heart attack, and deep realizations about the importance of community and change.
September - October: Hurricane Helene’s Wrath
In late September, Hurricane Helene swept through Asheville, leaving devastation in its wake. I was fortunate my home was spared from the worst, but a large branch crashed onto my office roof, causing significant damage as rain poured in. In the aftermath, power outages, water shortages, and the constant sound of chainsaws and generators became part of daily life.
As I drove around town, I was struck by the scenes of fallen trees and wrecked homes. But what touched me most was the resilience and kindness of the community. A local church became a beacon of hope, offering food, water, and supplies to those in need. Sitting there using their Wi-Fi, I felt the power of human connection in a way I’ll never forget.
November: Seeking Healing in Kauai
After the chaos of the hurricane, I felt called to take some time to heal. Kauai, with its lush beauty and nurturing energy, seemed like the perfect place. But on the seventh day of my retreat, after a deeply relaxing Lomi Lomi massage, I found myself struggling while swimming.
I later learned I’d suffered a heart attack. My dear friend quickly pulled me from the water, and within minutes, an ambulance arrived. I was airlifted to Honolulu, where a brilliant doctor placed a stent in an artery that had been 90% blocked. His care and compassion were extraordinary, and he even remarked on the "broken heart" I was carrying from witnessing so much suffering in Asheville.
Though it was an incredibly challenging experience, I felt deeply supported by the universe’s perfect timing and the love surrounding me.
December: Recovery in Sebastopol
After my heart procedure, I returned to Sebastopol, California, a town I called home for 23 years. Being back in this familiar and nurturing environment, surrounded by friends and colleagues, has been profoundly healing.
I’ve been staying with friends and housesitting, which has given me the space to rest and focus on my recovery. The love and care I’ve received here have been a balm for my soul. It’s reminded me of how vital it is to allow others to support us in times of need, deepening the sense of interconnectedness I hold dear.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter
As I reflect on these past months, it’s clear that change is necessary. The ongoing recovery efforts in Asheville, with the constant noise of rebuilding, have made it challenging to focus on my work. After much contemplation, I’ve decided to move back to Sebastopol in the spring.
This decision is bittersweet, I’ve loved my time in Asheville, but my heart knows this move is the right step for my well-being and the next chapter of my life.
Lessons Learned
One of the most profound lessons I’ve learned during this time is the importance of asking for help. Whether it’s for lodging, a car to borrow, or even groceries, I’ve seen how allowing others to support me strengthens our bonds and reminds us of the village we all belong to.
Though my work has been limited during this recovery period, I’m slowly regaining my strength. I’ve begun to take on a few sessions, and I’m looking forward to fully stepping back into my calling to channel healing energy and guide others on their paths.
Gratitude and Love
Thank you for holding me in your hearts during these challenging months. Your love, prayers, and kindness have been a beacon of light. I hope my story reminds us all to ask for what we need, to give with open hearts, and to trust that together we can navigate even the most difficult times.
With love and gratitude,
Evalena
